He loved her in the way a climber loves the treachery of the mountains, or a sailor loves the unforgiving depths of the sea. It surrounded him, and even as the uncertainty of what lay ahead swallowed him whole, as the ropes frayed against the rocks and the waves crashed against the hull, he dived in headfirst. And there, lost in the sort of comfort one only affords with complete and candid vulnerability to the elements of fate, he found relief.
